Lecture: Learning the meaning of words from text
How do we tell a computer what a word means? As software engineers, you would probably come up with an idea such as making an object-oriented model of the domain you're interested in, and then creating a mapping from word strings to the concepts used in the model. However, the design of such a model requires a large amount of manual work, so in the natural language processing (NLP) research community there is a growing interest in methods that pick up the meaning of words simply by observing raw text. In this talk, I will give an introduction to these methods, their implementation, and some software you can try out at home.
